All trips require the signing of a release and liability waiver. Most of the time the guides utilize McKenzie style drift boats, the finest craft for float fishing the Guadalupe and other large rivers in The Texas Hill Country. On some rocky streams that are more difficult to navigate, rafts are used. We often stop to wade fish the better riffles. Relax while our guides prepare a stream side lunch and enjoy the spectacular views of the Texas Hill Country. For larger groups, the Outfitters and Guides we utilize, are the Best in the Business! Most fishermen take a guided fishing trip to have the very best opportunity to catch some nice fish, get easier access to a particular stream or river while floating, but also to sharpen up their fly fishing skills. The addition of guides to accommodate the larger groups, are the cream of the crop and some of the most experienced you'll find in Texas! These fellows know the waters we fish intimately, and they are masters at reading the water. They work hard at putting you into the best water for the kind of fishing you prefer. They will show you the right flies to use, help you rig your tackle, and teach you the exact techniques needed to help you catch the largest fish. More importantly, they are people with whom you'll enjoy spending a day on the water.

Both full day and half day can be custom designed for each excursion package listed on the package page.

Our guides are the most experienced in the business, Bill Higdon, Clint Jackson, Chris Johnson, Ted  Mendrek, & Marcos Rodriguez  our pro guide staff.  Clint has been professional guide in the Texas Hill Country for over 20 years. Chris is owner and manager of Living Waters Fly Shop in Austin/Round Rock.  Also Ted Mendrick of Sportsman's Finest in Austin.  Below are a short bios of Clint, Chris, Ted & Marcos.

The story of how I began fly fishing isn’t “textbook” to say the least.  I wasn’t born in trout country and trained to wave a fly rod at the age of three by my fly fishing relatives.  I grew up in central Texas and taught myself to fly fish in the small creeks and streams that flow throughout the Texas hill country.  When I began fly fishing, I was the only person that I knew that was casting a fly.  As a result, my fly fishing teachers were, and still are, the rivers that I fish and the fish that swim in them.  If one wants to learn the intricacies of fly fishing, there is no better way to do it than to get on the water and let the fish do the talking.  To this day, home feels like water rushing past my legs on a hill country river!  I have fly fished for many different species of fish and have had the privilege of traveling to several different countries to do so.  I have been blessed with the opportunity to make a living guiding on the rivers that taught me to fly fish and have been doing so for the past several years.  If I am not on a river then I can be found behind a fly tying vise or helping customers at my fly shop, Living Waters Fly Fishing, in Round Rock, Texas.  I thoroughly enjoy this wonderful sport and love to introduce others to the endless pleasure that is fly fishing.  See you on the water!  Chris JohnsonLiving Waters Fly Fishing

Bill,

My fishing partner Ben McClure and I came over to fish the Guadalupe on Friday, January 23

We had a great outing with Guide Chris Johnson. The weather was perfect, the river uncrowded and the fish were plentiful and large.

Ben and I had a fabulous outing do in large part to Chris and his helpful, friendly manner. Both Ben and I have fly fishing experience but are no means flawless in our casting, drifts and technique. Chris did a great job of giving us tips and corrections in a jovial, collaborative fashion. His coaching with a fish on the line helped us both land fish that we would have otherwise lost. Above all, we had a good time.

Besides thanking you for such a wonderful fishing trip, I wanted to share with you my hearty recommendation of Chris as a guide. His work on our trip was a key part of our success and I look forward to fishing again in the near future.

Next time I see you, I will give you a play-by-play breakdown of the 28” rainbow I caught with Chris at ________________ It was an absolute monster. But, that is a story for another day……

Best Regards,

Jeff Sipes

I grew up in the river bottoms of East Texas. When I was nine I taught myself to fly fish and tie flies. Living all over Texas as a teenager gave me the chance to fish every corner of the state. I fell in love with the Hill Country where I met my wife Mary. For our first date we went fishing.  I have guided hunting in West Texas and fishing across the Hill Country. I have been a commercial fly tyer and I have taught flytying for over 20 years. When I'm not Guiding, I'm dealing with Nuisance Wildlife in the Austin area. I was told when I was a kid that if I did something I loved to do then I would never have to work again in my life. Well it's true!

Ted has been employed full time in the fly fishing industry since 98 through working in fly shops to guiding and he is currently employed at Sportsman’s Finest in Austin, TX.  His passion for fly fishing has lead him to see and fish some special places throughout the world and spend several seasons guiding on the remote Alaska Pennisula.  He has learned and shared much knowledge with both the novice and seasoned angler.  Ted realizes the greatest part of working in a fly shop or guiding is the exchange of knowledge of fly tying, fly casting, fishing techniques, etc…. You can never learn it all - it is a continual process.

Ted and I have worked and fished together for nearly a decade on the Alaska Peninsula during the summer months, hosting fishermen and their families from all over the world. The work is strenuous and the hours never-ending; the conditions, at times, would make a weaker man cry for his momma. Ted makes it all look easy. Ted has spent years in the retail business but there’s no doubt he’s at his best on the water. It’s his incomparable work ethic, approachable nature, knowledge of fly fishing, and ultimately, his dedication to making sure our customers have the absolute best experience possible, are qualities that may make him the finest guide I will ever know.

Bill is 59 years of age, and began fly fishing the Texas Hill Country, over 16 years ago.    After retirement from Dell Computers in 2000, he moved to banks of the Guadalupe River and became a full time guide on the rivers and streams he has loved and fished for the past 16+ years.

Marcos.JPGGood Day!
My name is Marcus Rodriguez.  I have been fishing and exploring the wilds of Texas for most of my life.  I was raised on the Blanco River and during most of my youth I could be found fishing and hunting the surrounding hills.  I have been fly fishing since I was eleven years old.

I am a graduate of Texas State University and my major is Natural Resource Management.  During college I helped start a Texas Hill Country fly fishing service called The Guides of Texas.  I have been actively guiding since October 1997.  Currently, I paddle, fish, and guide on over 1000 miles of Hill Country streams.  I am a river nut.  I love the dynamics of rivers and the fish that inhabit them.  I have traveled the world, but Texas is my home and I enjoy introducing others to my home waters.
I am looking forward to joining the staff at In the Hills Fishing and being a resource for fly fishing in Texas.
